5 reasons people with changing pay use the Wallet Method

  1. A pot for everything you earnEvery dollar you bring in goes into one account first. Big months fill it up.
  2. A steady salary out of the potYou pick a salary from your worst month (safest) or your average month (more to live on). Same amount, every month.
  3. Slow months stop being scaryA slow month draws from the pot instead of going on the credit card.
  4. Your weekly spending allowance stays the sameBecause the salary is steady, your weekly adult allowance is steady too, no matter what came in.
  5. A whole chapter and a workbook tabThe book has a full chapter on changing pay, and the workbook has a Pot tab that does the math.

How it works

  1. Pay yourself first. On payday, at least 10% goes to savings before anything else.
  2. Cover your bills. Everything that comes out on its own, set up once.
  3. Get your weekly spending allowance: a set amount for everything else, like groceries, eating out, coffee and fun. It refills the same day every week.

When the wallet is empty, it's empty until refill day.

Who made it

I'm Steve. I worked at two of Canada's big banks, then spent more than ten years as a mortgage broker, going through people's bank and credit card statements at their kitchen tables. A lot of them said the same thing: "I had no idea." This is the method I showed them, and the one I ran myself.
